How deep should a raised bed be for root vegetables?

Building my first raised bed. Planning carrots and beetroot.

Is 30 cm enough?
Should I put cardboard at the bottom?

30 cm works for short carrots. Go 40 cm or more for long varieties.

Cardboard at the bottom is fine, it breaks down within a season.
